The Second Australia-New Zealand Conference on Geomechanics continues the sequence of conference which started in Melbourne in 1952 with the First Australia-New Zealand Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering. This series continued to the 5th Conference in Auckland, 1967, after which the widening scope of interest was formally recognised by changing the title of the Melbourne gathering in 1971 to the First Australia-New Zealand Conference on Geomechanics.
This volume contains the papers presented at the technical sessions of the Conference. The Conference comes at a time of remarkable development in the field of geomechanics. It continues to contribute to the growth of knowledge, the productivity of mines and the achievements of science and engineering.
