Presented by Martin Larisch & Tim Pervan

The presentation introduces some of the most common ground improvement techniques. It will set a particular focus on  the  design  philosophy and  construction  challenges  of executing ground improvement to mitigate seismic liquefaction.

It includes a case study and discussion on the riskbased approach adopted for the  use  of dynamic compaction  of dune sands and describes other improvement techniques that met design criteria modelled to mitigate the effects of seismic liquefaction.

In  terms of  dynamic compaction, the  talk compares field trials of various drop energies with corresponding ground vibration data and discusses how this was used to develop a programme of treatment to meet the ground improvement criteria while limiting environmental effects.
