On 8 August 1979 the Abbotsford landslip occurred – resulting in 18 hectares of land and 69 houses shifting 48 metres down the hill. 40 years later, join us to hear about this significant geotechnical event and about current landslip work around Dunedin.

Engineering New Zealand, New Zealand Geotechnical Society and University of Otago Geology Department have partnered to bring you this event, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Abbotsford landslip.

Drinks and pizza will be provided, followed by presentations.

Speakers include:

  • Associate Professor Andrew R Gorman, University of Otago; Historical context of the Abbotsford landslip and its use in teaching undergraduate students.
  • Lee Patterson, Stantec; Dunedin City hazards mapping in the context of the Abbotsford landslip.
