New Zealand Geotechnical Society and Engineering New Zealand are pleased to invite you to a talk that will comprise a general overview of the Chartership process and guidance on achieving competence groups 1 to 4.

The talk will be followed by a mock review with a recently Chartered member and conclude with a Q&A session. The event is primarily aimed at geotechnical engineers who are progressing towards their Chartership and planning to sit the CPEng review with Engineering New Zealand in the next year or two. Speaking on the topic will be Geoffrey Farquhar and Malcolm Stapleton who are both assessors with Engineering New Zealand. Eli Maynard has kindly volunteered to be the reviewee for the event.

Geoff is a Principal and Technical Director (Dams & Geotechnical) at GHD Limited in Auckland. He has 40 years of consulting experience in New Zealand and overseas and his work focuses on both technical leadership and providing technical input to infrastructure projects in New Zealand. He is a Board Member and Fellow of Engineering New Zealand, has served for six years on the Competency Assessment Board and was instrumental in the development of a register for Professional Engineering Geologists. He is a life member and former Chair of the NZGS.

Malcolm is a Principal at Babbage Consultants and specialises in environmental and geotechnical engineering, site investigation and remediation, and geotechnical aspects of projects. He heads the Babbage geoenvironmental team, which includes geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists, the geotechnical laboratory, the environmental group, the Bioresearchers group, and a team that addresses local body and government planning controls. He is a Fellow of Engineering New Zealand and a practice area assessor for geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering.

Eli is a Chartered Senior Water Resources/Geotechnical Engineer at Riley Consultants in Auckland and specialises in geotechnical and dam engineering. He has design and construction experience including: new embankment dams for water storage; assessment and remediation of existing dams; shallow foundations, piling and ground improvement; slope remediation; flood protection and land drainage schemes; hydraulic structures including pipelines, energy dissipaters, irrigation schemes, stormwater infrastructure and wells; and temporary and permanent dewatering.
