Release of Joint MBIE/NZGS Geotechnical Guidance Module 3: Liquefaction Assessment, and Appendices 3, 4 & 5 for Module 5A: Ground Improvement Specification

- Ross Roberts

Joint MBIE/NZGS geotechnical engineering guidance, Module 3: Identification, Assessment and Mitigation of Liquefaction Hazards of the `Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering Practice’ series, has now been published as Building Act s 175 guidance. This replaces the NZGS document published in July 2010 (Module 1 – Guideline for the identification, assessment and mitigation of liquefaction hazards).

Also released are appendices 3, 4 & 5 for Module 5A: Specification of Ground Improvement for residential properties in the Canterbury region. These consist of Method of Measurement and Basis for Payment, Schedule of Prices, and example drawings. While these have been developed for Canterbury, they are likely to have applicability elsewhere. These appendices are issued as a separate document and will be amalgamated into the next revision of Module 5A.

Both documents are being issued for public comment.  NZGS members are encouraged to make use of these documents and return comments to the NZGS Secretary at modulefeedback@nzgs.org within six months for consideration by the editorial committee.

Other modules in the MBIE/NZGS Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering series will be progressively released during the year.
