SUMMARY:Soakage Design in Taranaki Soils
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Matthew Sullivan-Brown \nRegistration HERE \n  \nPresented by Matthew Sullivan-Brown \n  \nStormwater soakage design can sometimes be an afterthought for geotechnical practitioners. Join the NZGS Taranaki Branch for a collaborative discussion about stormwater design considerations in Taranaki soils. \nMatt will facilitate discussion based on some key findings from his recent NZGS Symposium 2025 Paper “Stormwater soakage rates in Taranaki Brown Ash”. There will also be group discussion on stormwater disposal suitability and best practices testing and design procedures. \nWe invite you to come socialise\, eat\, drink\, and to engage in discussion with us.

SUMMARY:Landslides 2026
DESCRIPTION:The New Zealand Geotechnical Society is delighted to welcome you to the First International Joint Workshop of JTC1 and JTC3 on Landslide Risk Assessment\, Communication and Geo-education. We will share the latest research and develop best practice guidelines in the stunning New Zealand city of Queenstown. \nLandslides are one of New Zealand’s most significant natural hazards. Since 1760 there have been at least 1\,500 deaths from landslides in New Zealand. More fatalities have occurred from landslides than from earthquakes (501)\, volcanic activity (179) and tsunami (1) combined over the last 160 years. Queenstown is particularly vulnerable\, making it an ideal venue for a conference about landslides. More than 50% of the land around the town is mapped as known landslides\, with the underlying quartzofeldspathic schist very susceptible to deep seated failures. \nWebsite:  http://landsliderisk.nz/ \nRegister here: Registration – Landslide Risk & Geo-Education (LaRGE 2026) – for NZGS members discount code provided in NZGS newsletter (email) dated 31 November 2025.

SUMMARY:Bridge & Geotechnical Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:24-25 Aug 2025 – Auckland\, NZICC \nWe are excited to welcome you to the inaugural Bridge and Geotechnical Conference 2026 at the NZICC in Auckland\, New Zealand. This event builds on the successful 2024 conference hosted by NZTA in Hamilton. We are proud to continue its momentum. The NZ Bridge Engineering Technical Society (BETS) was established in 2024 as a Technical Interest Group under Engineering New Zealand with a vision of Enhancing Bridge Engineering in New Zealand. We represent a diverse community of professionals involved in bridge engineering — including design\, construction\, asset management\, training and research. Recognising the close relationship between bridge and geotechnical engineering\, we are pleased to co-host this event with the New Zealand Geotechnical Society (NZGS). This conference is designed to be a national platform for sharing knowledge\, showcasing innovation\, and fostering collaboration. Whether you are a consultant\, constructor or client\, you will find value in the technical sessions\, networking opportunities\, and exposure to emerging technologies. The program will address practical challenges and strategic priorities — from seismic resilience and sustainability to doing more with less in asset management and new design. Bridges and associated soil structures are vital connectors between communities\, and their performance depends on strong partnerships across disciplines. We aim to bring together clients\, designers and contractors to explore how we can maintain and deliver functional\, resilient and cost-effective infrastructure that enhances the environments we live and work in. We are thrilled to have secured internationally recognised keynote speakers\, alongside leading experts from New Zealand and Australia. Their insights will set the tone for the two days of engaging discussion and learning. \nVisit the website
