SUMMARY:Use of the 3D GPR Geophysical Method
DESCRIPTION:Register HERE \n  \nPresented by Kent Jacobsen \n  \nKent Jacobsen (SSFI\, B.E) presents a talk on the use of the ‘3D GPR’ geophysical method and some of its potential applications (e.g.\, paleo channels\, buried services\, sinkhole\, archaeological sites\, etc.). \nThis will also include a short visual presentation in which some album images from the 1987 Edgecumbe Earthquake will be shown\, together with video footage following the Christchurch earthquakes\, focusing on groundwater\, excess pore water pressure and liquefaction. \nFinally\, the presentation will cover some stopbank design aspects\, including a comparison of geotechnical testing between a house site and a stopbank in the Edgecumbe area\, where both peat and pumiceous soils provide some challenges. \nKent is an engineer with New Zealand Stopbank Services and a graduate of the University of Canterbury. With 20 years’ experience in sub-surface and foundation engineering\, often in and around waterways\, Kent brings deep practical expertise to complex ground and flood-risk environments. His engineering passions include flood protection\, finite element modelling\, deep foundations\, and groundwater/soakage calibration. \n

We will share the latest research and develop best practice guidelines in the stunning New Zealand city of Queenstown.  \nLandslides are one of New Zealand’s most significant natural hazards. Since 1760 there have been at least 1\,500 deaths from landslides in New Zealand. More fatalities have occurred from landslides than from earthquakes (501)\, volcanic activity (179) and tsunami (1) combined over the last 160 years. Queenstown is particularly vulnerable\, making it an ideal venue for a conference about landslides. DESCRIPTION:Register: HERE \nIntroduction to GIS for Geotechnical Practitioners  course is intended to provide geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists with an introduction to using geographical information systems (GIS) using the QGIS software platform. \nThe course will cover: \n\nan introduction to GIS concepts;\nimporting common GIS data formats including web services;\nadding\, editing\, symbolising and labelling data;\nspatial analysis using filters and queries;\nmaking maps to use in reports;\ntopographic cross-sections;\nvisualising landscapes with digital elevation models;\nimporting field photographs into GIS;\nmethods for working with important digital imagery such as historic aerial photos (stereo pairs)\, satellite imagery and scanned plans will also be outlined;\nQGIS plugins relevant to geotechnical investigations;\n\nA large part of the day is devoted to working through an exercise using the QGIS software to answer geotechnical questions and create a map and form an opinion for a hypothetical client. \nCourse materials will be available for download prior to the event: GIS datasets\, AS1726 compatible symbol sets\, NZ web connections\, exercise notes and video and presentation. DESCRIPTION:This online course is intended to provide geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists with an introduction to using geographical information systems (GIS) using the QGIS software platform. \nThe course will cover: \n\nan introduction to GIS concepts;\nimporting common GIS data formats including web services;\nadding\, editing\, symbolising and labelling data;\nspatial analysis using filters and queries;\nmaking maps to use in reports;\ntopographic cross-sections;\nvisualising landscapes with digital elevation models;\nimporting field photographs into GIS;\nmethods for working with important digital imagery such as historic aerial photos (stereo pairs)\, satellite imagery and scanned plans will also be outlined;\nQGIS plugins relevant to geotechnical investigations;\n\nA large part of the day is devoted to working through an exercise using the QGIS software to answer geotechnical questions and create a map and form an opinion for a hypothetical client. \nCourse materials will be available for download prior to the event: GIS datasets\, AS1726 compatible symbol sets\, NZ web connections\, exercise notes and video and presentation.
