Presented by Dr Ikuo Towhata FREE REGISTRATION HERE With Prof. Towhata as the Chief Editor, a book on earthquake-induced landslides will be published this year, which consists of 18 chapters written by many authors. In this webinar, Prof. Towhata will first address the recent situation in nature by addressing rainfalls and seismic activities of the earth. Next, he will focus on his chapter of the book which deals with topics such as the effects of fault action on slope instability, the long-term recovery from the coseismic instability of slopes, and the behavior of underground water that triggers post-seismic slope failures. After these specific engineering topics, he will then talk about what geotechnical engineers should do. This topic is a product of the Professional Image Committee of ISSMGE, for which he was the Chair from 2018 to 2022. Dr Ikuo Towhata obtained his BE, ME, and PhD from the University of Tokyo (Japan) in 1977, 1979 and 1982, respectively. He started his academic career as Research Associate at the University of Tokyo and was promoted to full Professor in 1994. In between, he also worked as post-doc at the University of British Columbia (Canada), Asst. Professor at Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand), and Research Fellow at the Public Works Research Institute (Japan). When he retired in 2015, he was appointed as Visiting Professor at Kanto Gakuin University as well as a Technical Advisor to several private companies. In 2016, he was made a Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo and he also served as Distinguished Visiting Professor at IIT Bombay. He received several prestigious awards, such as the 1998-1999 Shamsher Prakash Research Award, 2006 ISSMGE Heritage Lecture Award, 2018 Shamsher Prakash ISET Award for Significant Contribution in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, 2019 TC203 (ISSMGE) Ishihara Lecture Award, and many awards from the Japanese Geotechnical Society and Japan Society of Civil Engineers. He served as ISSMGE Vice President for Asia from 2013 – 2017, President of the Japanese Geotechnical Society from 2014 – 2016 and Chair of the ISSMGE Professional Image Committee from 2018 – 2022. His research focus is on geotechnical disasters and mitigation and he published 500+ research articles in international journals and conference proceedings. He is the author of the book Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, published by Springer in 2008.
