MATAWII WATER STORAGE RESERVOIR, WALLIS ROAD, KAIKOHE
Join the Northland branch for a site visit to the Matawii Dam in Kaikohe.
Matawii is a 750,000m3 water storage reservoir under construction on Kopenui Stream, northeast of Kaikohe. The reservoir is impounded by a 24m high earth-fill dam constructed using site-won volcanic soils. The reservoir forms part of a wider scheme under development in the Mid-North by Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust. Matawii is multi-purpose, supplying water to the Ngawha Innovation and Enterprise Park, horticultural land south of Kaikohe, and is a backup for existing municipal needs at Kaikohe. Matawii was the first project nationally to be granted consent under the COVID-19 Recovery (Fast-track consenting) ACT 2020.
