Abstract: The It’s Our Fault programme aims to position Wellington to be a more resilient city through a comprehensive study of the likelihood of large Wellington earthquakes, the effects of these earthquakes, and their impacts on humans and the built environment. It’s Our Fault is jointly funded by New Zealand’s Earthquake Commission, Accident Compensation Corporation, Wellington City Council, Wellington Region Emergency Management Group, and Greater Wellington Regional Council.

Work completed to date has largely focused on the Likelihood and Effects aspects of the programme. Likelihood results have already been presented elsewhere. Today’s presentation will focus on some of the exciting results coming out of the Effects phase – primarily the 3D geological and geotechnical characterisation of central Wellington and the Hutt Valley, and mapping of NZS 1170.5 subsoil classes. These characterisations are based on a compilation of ca 2000 borelogs, surface geology, and shear wave velocity determinations for the near-surface sediments (down to about 300 m depth) present in these two areas.

Bio of Russ: Senior Geologist, GNS Science, NZ. Born and raised in California, educated in the western USA, and resident in NZ for last 20 years. Fellow of the New Zealand Earthquake Engineering Society. Professional career has focused on the geological assessment of active fault lines, and earthquake hazards and risk throughout New Zealand. Project leader of the It’s Our Fault programme.
